Garlic Butter Naan Recipe

Soft and buttery homemade Garlic Butter Naan, just like your favourite restaurant-style Naan flavoured with lots of garlic and butter. Made with plain flour and yeast, it is super easy to make and delicious to eat. This is the only Garlic Naan recipe that you will ever need!

I made this recipe some time ago, and I was so happy the reason was that this Naan came out perfectly well, way beyond my expectations. My family could not believe I had made Naan, which looked like restaurant-style Naan. I was so thrilled that I wanted to share the recipe of this naan with all of you through the blog. 1. About the recipe

Naan is a leavened bread made in some countries in Asia. It is hugely popular in Indian and Pakistani Restaurants. It’s one bread that is always on the menu of every party, wedding and get-together. These breads are commonly baked in a tandoor (clay oven), but I prefer to cook Naan on a tawa or skillet on a stovetop at home. You can also grill or bake this Naan in the oven.

These Garlic Butter Naan taste so good with curries like Butter Chicken, Chicken Tikka Masala, Dal Makhani or Paneer Butter Masala that you end up loosening your guard about eating healthy food 😅.

Like most breads, naan is made with basic ingredients like flour, yoghurt, milk, yeast, sugar, and eggs. I added egg and yoghurt to keep it soft and nice. Since the recipe is for Garlic Naan, I also added grated garlic to the dough and brushed the Naan with garlic butter.

2. Ingredients 

  • 500 gram Plain flour (Maida)
  • 1 egg
  • 2 teaspoons of sugar
  • 2 teaspoons of active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 ½ cup lukewarm milk
  • 1 tablespoon of yoghurt
  • 2 tablespoons of refined oil
  • 1 tablespoon of grated garlic 

    Garlic Butter

  • 3 tablespoons of butter
  • 1 tablespoon of minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon of chopped coriander leaves (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon of white sesame seeds (optional)

3. Step by Step method

  • In a large mixing bowl, take plain flour and add salt.
  • In another small bowl, add lukewarm milk and then sugar and yeast. Let it bloom for 10 to 15 minutes. You will know the yeast is activated when it’s all bubbly and frothy on the top.
  • Add the activated yeast to the flour. Now add beaten egg, yoghurt, grated garlic and refined oil. Mix again with a spoon to distribute everything in the flour evenly.
  • Add milk gradually. First, mix and then begin to knead.
  • Knead to a smooth and soft dough. If the dough looks dry and hard, add some more milk and knead. If it becomes sticky, then sprinkle some flour and knead again. You should get a soft, stretchy dough.
  • Flatten the dough. You can even spread some oil all over the dough. Place in the same bowl.
  • Leave the dough for 2 hours.
  • After 2 hours, the dough will be more than double in size. Punch the dough lightly to release the air.
  • Divide the dough into 8 to 10 equal balls. Make medium-sized balls from the dough.
  • Meanwhile, melt 2 tablespoons of butter, and add minced garlic and white sesame seeds (optional). Keep the garlic butter ready to brush on the top of the Naan.
  • Roll it to a 7- to 8-inch elongated circle.
  • Heat a heavy griddle, pan or tawa on medium flame. Place the naan bread ready on the hot pan or griddle. Keep the flame medium and cook the naan. Let one side cook, flip the pan, and place it directly on the stovetop flame. Roast the edges, too.
  • Turn over and roast the second side until you see some charred spots. Place it on a plate, and spread melted garlic butter.
  • Serve the hot Garlic Butter Naan with your favourite curry or dal. It also pairs nicely with Chicken Butter Masala, Shahi Paneer, and Dal Makhani.

 4. Tips

  • You can easily replace white sesame seeds with onion seeds (kalonji).
  • Adding the yoghurt and egg to the recipe will make the dough stretchy and pillowy. It also helps to get a soft texture in the butter naan.
  • You can use 1 teaspoon of baking powder and 1 teaspoon of baking soda instead of yeast.
  • In this recipe, I am using milk for kneading the dough; milk will give a nice texture to the naan.
  • Butter Garlic Naan can also be prepared with whole wheat flour, or you can use both flour in equal quantities.
